Gantry or Overhead Travelling Cranes (as they are also known) are commonly used in manufacturing and similar type plants. While this class of plant was previously subject to operators holding an appropriate Certificate of Competency, since 1995 — when WorkSafe Victoria adopted a national approach to all licensing – these cranes and their use are not subject to any particular licensing of operators. However, operators must be provided with appropriate information, instruction & training to enable them to work safely when using this high risk mobile plant. The operation of these cranes and the associated slinging practices used to secure a load onto the
crane are high risk activities as shown by the deaths & injuries that are too frequently recorded.
